Paul the motor mechanic!

In 1973 Carmel and I were going out with each other, and I had a beaten up old mini called the "FVN-mobile" which we both loved to bits. One day there was a crunch, and the poor old mini was listing hard to one side! I feared the worst - but Carmel said "Paul will be able to fix that". Paul and Gerard had an old garage with a pit and hoist in Whitelow road, so Paul took me round there they discovered that my shock absorber had collapsed. Magically (or so it seemed to me at the time!) Paul and Ged jacked up the car on two jacks and the bad wheel on a third one, whipped out the broken "shocker" and replaced it with a new one - even John joined in (he got the job of wire brushing the rusty spring!) They fixed FVN-mobile up, then Paul said "right, lets go to the pub now" and off we all went to the Lloyds (I'd never been there before, and before we went I said to Paul and Ged "is it a nice pub then?". Paul smiled, and Ged said "Ian, do you know the difference between a pub and a boozer? - Well, the Lloyds is a boozer"). Paul was a brilliant mechanic and he helped me out many times with broken down cars, he even introduced me to "superchargers" after a succession of flat batteries! But I'll never forget that first time in Whitelow Road when I thought my FVN-mobile was a "gonner" and Paul fixed it up for me. If heaven has cars, you can bet your life Paul has mended many of them by now!
